The unsaturated materials investigated range from coarse-grain gravel to sandy loam. Ground-penetrating radar, ultrasound transmission and complex conductivity measurements were applied as geophysical methods. The 5 measured parameters were used to calculate soil parameters such as porosity, water content, density and grain surface area necessary to obtain geohydraulic parameters such as hydraulic conductivity, field capacity and retention parameters. Soil samples were taken and analysed regarding porosity, apparent density, true density and internal surface. The comparison between petrophysical data from the laboratory and from 10 geophysical measurements showed good correlations for the majority of the data.

A model for the resistivity structure of LNAPL plumes and their environs in sandy sediments

Geophysical site characterization investigations at fuel spill sites have been generally guided by a working hypothesis Ž . which assumes that the light non-aqueous phase liquids LNAPL are a fully saturating phase of intrinsically very high electrical resistivity. Using observations from other related sciences, and contrary geophysical observations, a different model is developed which treats t...

Estimating Flow Parameters Using Ground-penetrating Radar and Hydrological Data during Transient Flow in the Vadose Zone

Methods for determining the parameters necessary for modeling fluid flow and contaminant transport in the shallow subsurface are in great demand. Soil properties such as permeability, porosity, and water retention are typically estimated through the inversion of hydrological data (e.g., measurements of capillary pressure and water saturation). However, ill-posedness and non-uniqueness commonly ...

Identification of dominating factors affecting vadose zone vulnerability by a simulation method

The characteristics of vadose zone vulnerability dominating factors (VDFs) are closely related to the migration and transformation mechanisms of contaminants in the vadose zone, which directly affect the state of the contaminants percolating to the groundwater. This study analyzes the hydrogeological profile of the pore water regions in the vadose zone, and conceptualizes the vadose zone as sin...

barometric pressure cycles

Barometric pressure changes can induce airflow in an open borehole or well screened in the vadose zone, thereby ventilating the soil surrounding the borehole. This paper presents an analytic model of the induced airflow and compares the predictions of the model with experimental measurements. This model may be useful for the design of passive soil vapor extraction as applied to the remediation ...
